South Kensington must be my favourite area in London to stay when visiting. A 40 minutes direct tube-travel from Heathrow Airport to Gloucester Road and you’ll find yourself in this really nice area south west in central London. There are lots of hotels of different standard and price to choose between. I’ve stayed at Holiday Inn but you’ll also find hotels like Ibis and Premier Inn, all with reasonable prices and just a couple of minutes walk from Gloucester Road or Earls Court tube station. From here an easy 10 minutes tube ride to Oxford Circus.
Around Gloucester Road tube station you’ll find small shops. Convenience stores if you forgot to pack your toothbrush, pharmacies with great remedies for colds (try Lemsip), bookstores, flower stalls,- it just gives you this local feeling of actually living in London, not only visiting. If you , like me, enjoy an early morning stroll there’s a short walk to Kensington Garden with it’s lake, the famous Kensington Palace where Princess Diana lived and big open green spaces. Early mornings you’ll find the locals there, jogging, cycling to work, doing Thai Chi or yoga.
The beauty of London is by my standards the feeling of being “at home” and South Kensington is a place to find that. Walking the narrow alleys just of Cromwell Road, looking into the local bakery, have a meal at Kentucky Fried Chicken or a coffee at Starbucks,- do as the locals. I just want to live here!!
